• Daily Commutes - FORMAT13

FORMAT is an international photography festival which presents a selection of the best of international photography in a diverse programme of exhibitions and events. Curated by Louise Clements, Artistic Director of QUAD & FORMAT, the festival is hosted & organised by QUAD and the University of Derby.

I'm lucky enough to live in Derby (something you don't hear people say so often!) which is where the festival takes place, so over the past few weeks I've been exploring what FORMAT13 had to offer. One of my favourite exhibitions was Daily Commutes, a project by Debbie Cooper. Here's a few of my photos of the exhibition -

The project brings together four artists from around the world: Truls Bärg (Malmö, Sweden), Leora Tanzer (New York, USA), Emily Chen (Sydney, Australia), Debbie Adele Cooper (Derbyshire, UK). Each of these artists use phoneography to create and share an intimate portrait of their daily commute.

Their photographs invite the viewer to experience a road that has been travelled a thousand times and observe how the artists reinterpret the minutiae of the mundane into striking and diverse results.

In a world where time is a rare commodity and the opportunities for artists to create are packaged thinly between work, family and commitments; Daily Commutes shows four artists who use the train carriage as their studio and the journey as their muse.

This is a growing project that welcomes artists from all backgrounds who use their regular commute to work creatively. If you would like to contribute to the project please email info@debbiecooper.org

  • Bring it on, April.

Pretty much exactly this time last year I wrote a blog about the approaching madness that is April. It's that time AGAIN and I can't believe how quickly it's come around.

Each spring (I don't know if you can really call it spring at the moment..) I work with a selection of fashion students from the University of Derby to photograph their final collections. I absolutely love it as it means I get to work with some really exciting young designers and have a full month of fashion shoots to sink my teeth into!

Here's a very sneaky preview of one of shoots, shot last week in the SNOW (stupid Spring) at the beautiful Newstead Abbey. I'm so happy with this shot and I can't wait to share the rest. By the way, that a-mazing floral crown is from Crown and Glory.

So this year, I may have taken on a few more students than I did last time.. what can I say, I'm a sucker for an amazing collection and I just got carried away! The shoots kicked off last week but the real madness starts as of the 2nd April. I've got my partner in crime (MUA Sian Revill) by my side for all of the shoots so I cannot wait for a mad, fun, tiring month with probably a whole lot of Breaking Bad quotes and tea drinking thrown in.

To add to the mix, I've also got the 'Picture This' workshop in Birmingham with the talented ladies behind ThePaperGirls, Abbey & Lucy PLUS some lovely product shoots.

So c'mon April, bring it on! I'm ready for you. (Well, right after this bank holiday yeah?) You can keep upto date with the madness on my facebook page or via twitter.

  • Sally Montague - L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy Competition

Back in January I met up with the amazing team at Sally Montague in Derby (in their gorgeous flagship open-plan salon, The Old Hall) to photograph their entries for the L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy competitions.

A few weeks on, I'm delighted to share the news that they've got five models through to the regional finals! Here's one of my favourite images from the day -

  • London Engagement Session - Andy & Lauren

Back in January I met up with Andy & Lauren in London for their engagement session. These two are absolutely lovely and such a gorgeous couple! Both originally from Australia, the couple have been living and working in London for a few years now so we had lots of fun wandering around taking photographs in some of their favourite spots for them to show their friends and family back home.

We started off with the Tate Modern followed by a walk along the River Thames, then headed across the Millenium Bridge towards St Paul's Cathedral.

We finished the session off with a drink in Leon, a great little restaurant behind the Tate Modern. Andy & Lauren get married later this year in Australia and I'm sure they'll have an amazing day. I'm so excited to see their wedding photos!
