I've swapped my usual 'month in pictures' post for something a little more special because this month I celebrate HB Photography turning four! (It also appears that I barely instagrammed anything in August, which is a sure sign of a hectic month!)
I've never written a post about celebrating a business birthday before, but this year has been particularly important for me and my work. I feel like the business has progressed to such an extent in the past 12 months that it was necessary to blog about my four years in business!
I set HB Photography up in my final year of university with the aim to go freelance as soon as I graduated and this almost happened. During the first few months after finishing my degree I ended up working three part-time jobs at once. I was an admin assistant for a film company, a social media manager for a backpacking business AND an events co-ordinator for a creative magazine.
It was a bit manic, but leaving university was such a big change and financially, I couldn't risk packing it all in. After a few months of being so frustrated that I couldn't focus on photography full time, I decided to take a leap of faith and four years later… here I am!
I'm not going to pretend it hasn't been hard work because it has and continues to be, but I'm so passionate about what I do that it's worth the long hours - which is good as I haven't quite mastered the work/life balance yet, but I'm working on it. I think it's all part of learning to run your own business and achieving the life you want to live.
The last 18 months have seen my business completely change. It's turned from something with a slightly uncertain future, to a stable, thriving business. I've had no financial support or business mentoring (at least not since leaving university) - just the support of my family and friends, as well as a whole lot of hard work.
My rebrand in January 2014 was a huge turning point for me (and I'm eternally grateful to Claire Hawkes for this) and the months since then have seen my client base grow and a number of opportunities come my way that I couldn't have dreamed of this time last year.
I feel so lucky to be able to do what I love for a living every single day, so thank you to everyone that's supported me along the way (and continues to do so) and to all of you who hire me/tweet me/share my work. You're the absolute best and HB Photography wouldn't be celebrating four years in business without you!
Soppy bit over with... bring on the next four years (and many more beyond). I have some rather exciting plans up my sleeve which I can't wait to share with you all in the coming weeks. Bring it on! :)
